Artichoke Seed Garlic

SOFTNECK

Artichoke strains are generally the most productive and easy to grow of all garlic varieties.  A softneck variety, they have multiple layers of cloves with as many as twenty large plump cloves in a single bulb. Artichoke strains can be grown successfully in almost any climate.  They perhaps contain the greatest diversity in flavor between strains, some are quite spicy and rich while others are the mildest of any strains that we sell.  Colors rage from bright white to red and purple streaks.  We sell bulbs 2+ inches diameter.

Approx 65 cloves per pound and stores approx 10 months

CALIFORNIA EARLY

Large, sometimes slightly flattened bulbs. Mostly 4 clove layers with 10 to 21 cloves per bulb, but 13 or 14 are common. Clove color tan or off white, often with pink blush. Not many small cloves. Better adapted to heat than Susanville but very vigorous and productive variety. Few stem bulbils. Mild flavor makes this one a good choice for eating raw or for those who prefer garlic flavor without the heat!

GODFATHER'S ITALIAN

Original stock said to be from Seeds of Italy. A fascinating variety with much variability. Purple striping and large cloves. Some bulbs have only one layer of cloves and as few as 5 cloves total. Most bulbs have several layers and more cloves. With its purple striping, propensity to produce a scape, and relatively few cloves, we used to think Godfather's was a Marbled Purple Stripe. But, with it's broad leaves and sometimes layered clove structure we now believe it to be an artichoke variety.

CHET‘S ITALIAN RED Bulk

Originally selected by Chet Stevenson from an abandoned garden site in Tonasket, Washington in the 1960's. 10 to 20 cloves in 4 clove layers. A good raw garlic for folks who want garlic flavor without being overpowered, but extreme winter cold makes it hot, strong, and full flavored. Does not do well when overly wet in last month before harvest.

We have sold our yield for this season. Please check back in 2018. Similar strains include Sicilian Artichoke & Burque.
